Although the flower photographed is not a sunflower, this haiku brought to mind a bright flower starting to bloom. I chose this photo because the flower is just beginning to burst into bloom and is the only bright color in a background of green. It feels like a symbol of the coming spring season and the brightness that brings.
here at the movies
a beam of light makes me cry
it is impressive
While in quarantine, going to the movies is not really an option, so many people have been staying home and watching Netflix in bed. In this bizarre time, this haiku made me think of sitting and watching a nature documentary right at the point where a predator catches the prey that the filmmakers have been following. It is a mixture of sad and happy, and overall an impressive display of the power of nature. I also wanted to incorporate light, as it is the focal point of the haiku. This cozy, home movie setup can still produce the types of emotions a film in a theater can produce.
sad balloons and rain
framed in a giant cut-out
coffee cup decal
This haiku made me think of cleaning up the day after a birthday party. I did not choose to take the “coffee cup decal” detail literally, and instead saw it as a metaphor for capturing the moment even when it is a sad moment that requires a lot of motivation. The entire theme of this haiku seemed sad, like the aftermath of a birthday. There are deflated balloons and bags of trash to be discarded, the last remnants of the happy event that took place. There also is a literal cup of coffee to motivate the character supposedly cleaning up the mess.
